Welcome to landroversforsale's online listing. You are bidding on an Arles Blue 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 Station Wagon. This is a very nice, very clean, well-optioned Defender 90 that runs and drives as good as it looks. Options include; 4.0L V-8 Engine, ZF Automatic transmission, Air Conditioning, BF Goodrich Tires, 16" Factory Alloy Wheels, (6) passenger seating, sunroof, Alpine AM/ FM/ CD player stereo system, (4) Boston Acoustic Speakers, and more! It is our understanding that in 1997 Land Rover had overproduced the amount of U.S. Spec Land Rover Defender 90's. This wasn't a big deal, except for the fact that the U.S. Safety and Emission laws had changed, and would prohibit any 1998 Defender 90’s from being imported. Land Rover was faced with an obstacle of where to send these left over vehicles that were built specifically for the U.S. market. Land Rover had to find countries that wouldn’t mind paying a premium for left hand drive, gasoline vehicles with heavily equipped emissions and safety equipment. The decision Land Rover made was to send these left over U.S. spec vehicles to Japan and Dubai. Both of these countries were very wealthy, and both countries were places where U.S. Vehicles (and left hand drive) is considered a status symbol. Our understanding is further confirmed by the fact that these vehicles were not sent to Japan or Dubai until after the U.S.’s refusal to further import the Defender 90. All of these vehicles have very late VIN numbers and build dates compared to the U.S Imports. These vehicles still have the seventeen digit U.S. VIN numbers, all U.S. markings including a sticker under the hood stating that "this vehicle conforms to the US EPA regulations applicable to 1997 model year new light-duty trucks and state of California regulations applicable to 1997 model year new medium duty trucks”. The factory retrofitted these limited Defender 90s with a few options not found on U.S. models such as; cloth seating, power windows, and a straight exhaust pipe. This vehicle was imported to the U.S. in 2007 (see CARFAX report). After being imported the non-U.S. marker lights were converted back to U.S. spec. The exterior is in great condition. The finish on the paint is nice and glossy. The only exterior apologies are a few minor imperfections typical of an thirteen-year-old vehicle (see pics). The wheels look good and the tires have plenty of tread remaining. The undercarriage and engine compartment is clean. The interior is in great condition. The carpet has less wear than you would expect from a 12-year-old vehicle and all six seats look good. This vehicle is equipped with an Alpine stereo and (4) Boston Acoustic speakers. This Defender drives very well.
